A manifesto of knit-geekery.

(Return from another Hiatus?)

So I’m bad at posting, but to be fair, it’s really hard to knit in summertime NYC when you don’t have air conditioning.  Now that it’s fall, I’ll hopefully take out my needles more, especially because of this exciting news:

I’M INTERNING AT VOGUE KNITTING!!!!  ::jumps up and down and squeals::

I’ve been working there for about two weeks - everyone is super friendly, and there’s seriously yarn EVERYWHERE.  They have free coffee and a free yarn bin, so basically, I’m a happy camper, even if my schedule is pretty crammed.

Returning from hiatus

I’m finally over the fucked up sweater, just in time for Ravelry’s Nerd Wars.  I’m on Team Squints, dedicated to Bones fandom.  I haven’t any pictures to post at the moment, but I just thought I’d let you all know that I’m alive, well, and knitting.  And sweating like hell, because summers in New York City, while fun, are gross.

Much love,

Katharine

After a knitting a sweater for a month on size 3s with fingering weight, I’ve found that it’s huge.  Like, too huge to be saved.  So I’m frogging it…I feel like crying…

Wishing

After acknowledging that it takes about 45 minutes to wind a 50g hank of yarn into a ball, I wish I had a swift.  Oh, how I rue a lack of income and space!

I finished the hat for Anthony - a simple 3x2 rib in a gorgeous teal Berroco Vintage - but have no way of telling whether or not it will fit him.  I guess I’ll find out whenever we both happen to be in the same city!

In other knitting news, I’m on the last sleeve of my Aidez, and I’m working on something for my sister-in-law’s birthday, which I’d like to keep a surprise!  I will say, though, that I’m enjoying working with fingering weight yarn way more than I expected to!

I knit up a quick summer scarf using this pattern from Lion Brand.  It was a fun pattern, and the scarf turned out quite pretty, but it’s about 10 inches shorter lengthwise than it’s supposed to be, which makes it more of a bandana than a scarf.  It’ll work, though.  Maybe I’ll add a few buttons to make the fit better.

Yarn binge!

Knitpicks is having a yarn sale!!  I just bought enough yarn to make three sweaters; one for my sister-in-law, Sarah, for her birthday in June (a short sleeved sweater in a fingering weight yarn that she can hopefully wear when she gets it!), one for my sister, Liana, for her birthday in November, and one for me, based on this cardigan that I saw online, but which was WAY overpriced:

When easy-looking knitwear costs too much, that’s always the solution!

Happy happy happy! =)

27. March, 2011

I’ve finally finished the Lutz & Patmos cardigan that I started in August 2010 - with only a few weeks to spare before New York realizes that it’s spring!  I had let it languish in the Fall, due to the busiest semester of my life, and then since I was traveling in the Winter, I didn’t work on it much then, either.  But, I’m in the middle of midterms right now, and while that means a lot of studying, it also means fewer written assignments.  Hence, an excuse to knit and watch Buffy the Vampire Slayer on Netflix!

As of Thursday, I only had the back, one front panel, and one sleeve finished.  In two days, I finished the other two pieces, sewed the whole thing together, knit the collar (I made it about an inch shorter than the pattern said) and blocked it.  I’m in love!

No mods, except the shorter collar.  I also accidently bought bulky yarn instead of super-bulky (Knitpicks Wool of the Andes in Pewter), so it’s a bit snugger than the pattern suggests.  Which is fine with me - I think it’s the perfect length and width!

Nice to finally check this off my WIP list; now onto schoolwork.  German novels and early American literature!  Yay!

New Semester/Knitting semi-hiatus/gloves

Good Morning, New York!

I’m already being an unfaithful blogger, but that’s simply a side product of the onset of the Spring semester.  I’m taking 5 classes - all of which are advanced major courses - so much of my time is consumed by reading and writing, in two languages nonetheless.  While my mind is expanding, my knitting has slowed almost to a halt.  Before the semester really got started, I managed to finish a glove and begin another:

glove

I hate buying gloves.  Apparently I have unusually sized and/or shaped hands, where glove manufacturers suppose that long fingers means larger (thicker) hands.  Thus, gloves that I try on fit the fingers but not the palm, or fit the palm but the fingers don’t work.  And then there are some really strange Freddy Kreuger gloves, where the fingers are longer than any human’s could possibly be.

The solution: Make my own, with lots of trying on to ensure that they are perfectly suited to my hands.

I CO 36 st and worked 3” in 2x2 rib, then increased to 44 st for the palm.  I placed the thumbhole after 10 rows, and worked an additional 20 (I think) to the fingers, and allotted 11 st for the index finger, 12 for the middle, 11 for the ring, and 10 for the pinky.  I also picked up and knit 1 st between the fingers, to eliminate the gap that would’ve appeared there.

I will eventually finish the other projects, particularly my cardigan that I cast on last AUGUST.  Ugh, project ADD…

Happy Wednesday!

After 2 weeks in sunny, lovely Long Beach, California, I’m back to single-digit weather in New York.  My visit flew by, in part because of the fun I had with my nieces, Amaya and Rosemary.  These pictures show Rosemary, wearing (surprise!) the mint-chocolate Ripley I knitted right before I left.  So cute!
